Cherry
School,
located on highway 83 near Greenland Road, was built in 1912 after
the Pratt School burned. These were the first
schools on West Cherry Creek. As many as 20 students attended Cherry during
the 1930's.
The school circa 1950. Click picture for larger view.
The school was closed in 1952 when District 20 was consolidated with District
40. In 1953 Pete Sanchez purchased the property and lived there for 41 years. As
with many schools in Douglas County the building also served as a
Sunday school and social gathering area. In the blizzard of December 1913
several children were stranded alone for two days along with their horses inside
because no one could get to them. Luckily, due to good sense to stay put, no one
was killed.
The school today.
