This 1924 picture of the administrative building of the American Federation of Human Rights, a co-Masonic fraternal order, shows the inauguration general assembly.  The Federation incorporated in 1915 and purchased 500 acres in Larkspur to serve as its international headquarters.  This building, built in 1918 with local materials, serves as the focal point for the compound.  The object of the organization was to demand equal rights for both sexes, better working conditions, and to combat ignorance.  Since many of its members were engaged in coal mining, the compound doubled as a retirement place for miners affected with lung disease and a home for orphans and widows.  The headquarters building was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in March of 1998.
