Post Office
In 1862 Huntsville, a stage route was located 3 miles north of current
day Larkspur and was the first Douglas County post office established by
Daniel Oakes postmaster for district 6. Mail was delivered by pony
express to Hunts Mountain. This postoffice was discontinued in 1867 and
then re-established in 1869. In 1871 the Denver and Rio Grande RR
came to Larkspur and the postoffice was moved from Huntsville to Larkspur
and located in the Denver and Rio Grande depot there.
The town of Larkspur was so named by governor Hunt's wife Elizabeth
after the flower which grows abundantly in the area. Larkspur then
became a real RR town with freight of gypsum, clay, lumber, creamery products
and a passenger line.
It is interesting to note that the Larkspur Post Office has been continuously
in use since 1869. When the Greenland Post Office closed in 1959 it was
replaced by a rural route from Larkspur.
